United Auto Workers Essay Contest

Rules & Regulations



Participation constitutes entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules. The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance 2017 UAW Calendar Photo Contest (“Contest”) will begin at 12:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on April 1, 2016 and end at 11:59 PM EDT on May 15, 2016. The contest is managed by the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (“USA”) a Tennessee non-profit corporation located at 235 Noah Drive, Suite 200, Franklin, TN 37064. Prizing is supplied courtesy of the USA.

Eligibility: The Contest is open members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) who are at least 21 years of age and legal residents of the 50 United States, Washington, D.C., or Canada. Employees of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, their families and sponsors are not eligible. By participating in the photo contest, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (“Sponsor”) judges, whose decisions are final and binding in all respects. Sponsor reserves the right to verify eligibility qualifications of the winners. This contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

How To Enter: No Purchase Necessary to Enter. There are two methods of entry, and participants can submit an unlimited number of entries.

Primary Entry

1. Complete a short entry form on the USA contest page (www.UnionSportsmen.org/UAWphotocontest) containing name, address, valid email address, phone number, union/local, several questions and a photo.

Secondary Entry

2. Submit your photo and the following information via email to Sandra Davis sdavis@uaw.net by Friday, May 13.
• Your Name
• Local number
• Region
• Information about when and where the photo was taken
• Identifying information for all others featured in the photo including ages of children identified

All online entries must be received by USA or its designee during the Entry Period. Multiple participants are not permitted to share the same email address. In the event of a dispute as to an entrant’s entry, the natural person who is the authorized account holder of the email address used to enter will be deemed to be the entrant, but only if that person is otherwise eligible to enter the Contest. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned to an email address by an Internet Service Provider, online service provider, or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. A potential winner may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder. If a dispute cannot be resolved to Sponsor’s satisfaction, the potential winning entrant may be deemed ineligible.

Third Entry

3. Mail a 3×5 index card or that includes name, address, valid email address, phone number and union/local along with printed photo(s). Proof of mailing does not constitute proof of delivery. Lost, late, illegible, and postage due entries are not eligible.

All mail in entries must be sent to UAW Photo Contest, c/o USA, 235 Noah Drive, Suite 200, Franklin, TN 37064 and entries must be postmarked by May 15, 2016 and received by 11:59 PM EDT on May 20, 2016.

All entries will become the exclusive property of the USA, will not be returned, and may be published on the USA’s website, www.UnionSportsmen.org; in the USA’s 2017 UAW calendar; and on USA promotional materials including but not limited to e-newsletters, magazines and other print collateral. By participating, you consent for the USA to obtain, use, and transfer your name, address and other information for the sole purpose of administering this Contest. Contest Entities are not responsible for: lost, late, incomplete, illegible, incorrect, delayed, garbled, undelivered, misdirected, stolen, postage-due registrations, entries or mail. All entries become the exclusive property of the USA and will not be acknowledged or returned.

Internet Limitations of Liability: If for any reason this Contest is not capable of running as planned due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the USA which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Contest, the USA reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest in whole or in part, at any time, without notice and award the prizes using all non-suspect eligible entries received as of this termination date. USA assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. The USA is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or telephone lines, computer on-line systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by USA on account of technical problems, human error or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Website, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s computer relating to or resulting from participation in this Contest or downloading any materials in this Contest. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, THE USA RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES OR OTHER REMEDIES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON (S) RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ATTEMPT TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

Prizes: One (1) Grand Place Prize which consists of a Colt Mustang Pocketlite .380 SS handgun.

Twelve (12) Second Place Prizes which consist of a USA 2017 UAW calendar.

Prizes are not exchangeable, transferable, or redeemable for cash. There are no substitutions unless specified by the USA. Winner must, as of the date of travel, be eighteen (21) years of age or older. The prize is awarded “AS IS” and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied, (including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose). Winner must execute liability/publicity releases prior to taking possession of prize.

By accepting the prize, prize winner agrees to release Contest Entities from any and all liability whatsoever for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind caused by entering the contest or for damages of any kind caused by any prize or resulting from acceptance, possession, or use/misuse of prize awarded. Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”) of the Grand Prize is five hundred ninety-nine dollars ($599). Approximate value of the second place prize is thirty dollars ($30).

Drawing and Notification: The grand prize winner will be selected from among all eligible entries received, in a random drawing conducted on or about May 22nd, 2016 by the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance whose decisions are final in all matters relating to this Contest. Odds of winning will depend on the total number of eligible entries received. Potential winners will be notified by phone, mail or electronic means. Upon initial notification and verification of potential winners, confirmation will be sent to winners in writing via email, USPS mail, or other home delivery service of USA’s choice. Second prize winners will be given to the twelve entrants whose photos are selected for inclusion in the USA’s 2017 UAW calendar.

Prize Conditions:Winners are solely responsible for all applicable federal, state and local taxes associated with the receipt of any prize. Grand prize winner will be required to sign an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability/Publicity Release and return it within 5 days of written notification. Failure to comply with these Official Rules may result in disqualification from the Contest. The winner’s entry and acceptance of the prize offered constitutes permission (except where prohibited) for the USA to use said winner’s name, photograph, likeness, statements, biographical information, voice and address (city and state), in all forms of media, in perpetuity, without notice or further compensation.

Terms & Conditions: This Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws. By participating, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the USA and waive any right to claim ambiguity in the Contest or these Official Rules. Winners and entrants also agree to release, discharge, indemnify and hold harmless the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance and its respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries and successor companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, representatives, and agents (hereinafter the “Released Parties”) from and against any claims, damages or liability due to any injuries, damages or losses to any person (including death) or property of any kind resulting in whole or in any part, directly or indirectly, from acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize offered, or participation in this Contest. Any person attempting to defraud or in any way tamper with the Contest mechanics and/or implementation will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Released Parties shall not be liable to any winner or any other person for failure to supply the prize or any part thereof by reason of any acts of God, any actions, regulations, orders, or requests by any governmental entity, equipment failure, terrorist acts, war, fire, unusually severe weather, embargo, labor dispute or strike, labor or material shortage, transportation interruption of any kind, or any other cause. This Contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law.

Publicity: Except where prohibited by law, participation in the Contest constitutes each winner’s consent to USA’s (and its designees’, successors’ and assigns’) use of winner’s name, biography, likeness, voice, photographs, video, opinions, statements, hometown, state and country for promotional purposes in any manner or media (including, without limitation, online), worldwide, in perpetuity, and without further payment, consideration, notice, attribution, review or consent.

The Union Plus Scholarship Program

Since 1991, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $4.2 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their post-secondary education.

Over 2,800 families have benefited from our commitment to higher education. The Union Plus Scholarship Program is offered through the Union Plus Education Foundation, supported in part by contributions from the provider of the Union Plus Credit Card. (You do not need to be a Union Plus Credit Card holder to apply for this scholarship.) See eligibility in the tab below.

The Facts 


Current and retired members of participating unions, their spouses and their dependent children (as defined by IRS regulations). At least one year of continuous union membership by the applicant, applicant's spouse or parent (if applicant is a dependent). The one year membership minimum must be satisfied by May 31, 2019.  See more details on eligibility in the tab below.

Evaluation Criteria

This is a competitive scholarship. Applicants are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended. The required essays can account for up to half your total score. Scholarship applicants are judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators

Application Timeline

Applications are available starting in mid-June, and a complete application must be received on or before 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on January 31, 2019. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.

Scholarship Award Amounts

Amounts range from $500 to $4,000. These one-time cash awards are for study beginning in the Fall of 2019. Students may re-apply each year.

Introducing Isaiah's Award

Union Plus is proud to announce the creation of Isaiah's Award, to honor the exceptional life of Isaiah C., a beloved child, fostered and adopted by a current, long-time employee of Union Plus.  Isaiah was a smart, talented, spiritual, generous and kind young man. It is our wish that his gentle spirit live on, in part, through this namesake scholarship.

Applicants for Isaiah's Award must have a special connection to the foster care system, and will be asked in their application to describe their personal, employment, volunteer experiences, or career goals related to the foster care system. 

Award Date

The Scholarship Committee will determine recipients of scholarship awards by May 31 each year. During the first week of June award recipients will be individually notified by mail, and all applicants will be sent an email with notification that the award list is posted.  Please note that due to the volume of applications we cannot provide any information on the status of an application before award announcements are made.

The students selected for university, college, trade or technical school scholarships represent a wide sampling of backgrounds, union affiliations, goals and accomplishments. The selection process is very competitive since we receive over 5,000 applications each year.
